Restoration

 

De-click & de-crackle

Manually removing large clicks caused by dirt and scratches - those sharp spikes that appear during quiet passages. Then eliminating small crackles throughout the audio.

This reduces the noise floor and improves clarity while preserving the original recording. The key is careful balance to avoid over-processing.

De-noise & de-hiss

Removing excess hiss and broadband noise using advanced algorithms that precisely identify noise profiles from optical and magnetic media. The process isolates unwanted noise while preserving all harmonic content and natural ambience.

The result is significantly improved signal-to-noise ratio with enhanced clarity and definition, all without introducing artifacts or errors.

De-hum

Removing hum and buzz caused by mains electricity and poor audio circuitry. This interference builds up during transfers and accumulates over multiple copies, becoming a distracting form of noise.

Eliminating it makes the audio easier to listen to and provides a more enjoyable experience, leaving the recording as intended.

 

Reversioning

 

Surround upmixing

Taking original stereo soundtracks and upmixing to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound using advanced processing tools. This transforms stereo content into an immersive experience that envelops audiences.

Dialogue remains crystal clear and focused while music and atmospheric elements wrap around the listener. The process breathes new life into stereo recordings, ensuring content meets contemporary presentation standards.

Vocal isolation

Removing or isolating vocals from finished mixes where multitrack stems no longer exist. Advanced separation technology extracts clean vocals from complex mixes or removes them entirely, leaving pristine instrumental tracks.

This opens creative possibilities for remixing, alternate versions, sync licensing, and archival purposes. Perfect for adding new vocals or creating instrumental-only versions.

Stem separation

Taking a full film soundtrack and separating it into dialogue, effects, and music elements. This enables better upmixing results, aids dubbing into other languages, and opens up reversioning options when original stems no longer exist.

Each element can be restored and processed independently - dialogue cleaned, music enhanced, effects reinforced. Essential for creating M&E tracks, accessible audio, and providing control when original sessions are unavailable.

VIAA is an archive striving to make digital heritage accessible to the publice. They are currently engaged in the preservation of audiovisual material in Flanders. VIAA digitise analogue material, and preserve original digital material on their servers. This is done in a sustainable way, so that future generations have access to the past.
